Extend your kitchen - add space and light!

The kitchen is the heart of our homes — the warm and friendly place everyone squeezes into at a party. But while most thought and square footage go into the bedrooms, the kitchen can often feel cramped and neglected.

At Cool Buildings, we aim to change that! A high quality, stylish and practical kitchen extension will both add value to your home and change the way you live within it. We create single-storey, multi-functional living spaces. You’ll be cooking, living, dining, relaxing and entertaining in this new, bright and airy space for years to come.

Currently one of the most popular building projects for homeowners, a kitchen extension creates one large open-plan room with well-defined spaces for cooking, storage and seating. As well as adding more room, of course, it can also increase the value of your home when it comes to selling.

The two main types of kitchen extensions are a rear extension or a side-return extension. The more common is the rear option simply because at the back of a property there’s usually more space to extend out into the garden. The side-return is great though for utilising dead space along the side of your house — particularly useful for those who own either a semi-detached or terraced property.

Rear Kitchen Extension
If your kitchen is already located at the back of your house then extending out into the garden space beyond is the most sensible option. Minimising the need to move electrics and waste pipes means less cost, too! Adding bi-fold doors means you can open the room out into the garden extending the space even further during the warmer months. Roof lanterns are a stunning addition allowing even more natural light to flood in.

Side-return kitchen
A side-return kitchen extension is less common because it relies on having dead space along the side of your house. You may also lose any side access to your garden or property, and planning permission can sometimes be a bit trickier as it will be determined by how close you are to your neighbour’s boundary wall or fence. The reward for turning this dead space into living space though is tremendous. Think additional storage, perhaps a downstairs loo or just loads more light flooding in!
