Our St Albans clients love their garden and spend as much time enjoying the outdoors as possible although the great British weather sometimes scuppers those plans! They were very clear in their vision of a home extension that was completely open to the garden i.e. no support posts interrupting their sight lines so that during wet or colder months they would still be able to experience the feeling of being outdoors!
This clever Cool Building features a floating cantilevered corner which is the ultimate in the indoor-outdoor design trend. The seamless aluminium roofline enabled us to connect the roofline directly into the doors. The surrounding soffit features external lighting creating a lovely natural glow which is perfect for late night entertaining. Add in some stunning bi-fold doors by Origin and cedar cladding to the external fascia and the client now has a light and clean-lined home extension which cleverly blends in with the garden and maximises their living space.
“We were keen to have a new room extended off our dining room into the garden but not a conservatory or something conventional. We interviewed several prominent suppliers looking for ideas and end-to-end ownership of the build. We were drawn to Cool Buildings and Derry who described a cantilevered (floating corner) glazed extension and just as importantly a build-model where the onus was not on us to manage subcontractors. The attention to detail as the work proceeded was key. The protection of the current rooms and the discussion on-site over details other builders might well have ignored. We would recommend Derry, Jon and every single member of their team without hesitation” ~ Mr & Mrs Townsend
What Jon says:
This Cool Building fulfilled all of the criteria in not needing planning permission. The new space was fully integrated into Mr and Mrs Townsend’s existing house with the addition of a south-facing 3-metre wide permanent opening, complete with special thermal glass so it remains cool in the summer and warmer in the winter.
